We have a tradition in our house – the birthday person gets to choose what the family is having for dinner on their birthday. Whatever it is, within reason, is made. It gives the birthday person a chance to feel special, even on those days when life has to go on.
Each person has different tastes and desires. It often changes year to year. Except for my middle child, who almost always chooses smoked sausage and rice. I rarely get mine made for me, but that is okay.
Yesterday was my mother-in-law’s birthday. I was preparing to go to the store, so I asked what she wanted for her birthday dinner. Her response was “Not that far in the day. Hope to leave about noon.
Something with mashed potatoes and gravy???”. I know, super helpful. The first plan I came up with was fried chicken, since we already had the chicken. However, when I was at the store I started thinking about the work it took to fry chicken. Plus, it didn’t sound great to me. And since she didn’t give me any other direction, I decided to go with a roast. It was a great choice. The smell of roast floating in the air had us all salivating. It turned out fabulously mouthwatering. As usual, my mashed potatoes were on point!
I love the little traditions we have like this. What little traditions do you have with your family? What is your favorite tradition?
