Where can you reduce clutter in your life?

When my oldest was just over one, we lost our house. So we moved in with my in-laws. It was supposed to be for a year or two, while we saved some money and got back on stable ground.

Because it was so short, we got a storage unit for all of our stuff. You know, the stuff we didn’t want to have to rebuy. Kitchen appliances, a futon, our collectibles, and things like that.

We’ve been here, living with his parents, for almost 20 years now. In that time things have been added to that storage unit.

His grandma died, so we added a few of her things to use when we got our place. My brother died, so we added some of his things that I couldn’t part with. My mom died, and we added a bunch of her things because my dad just wanted it all gone. My grandma died, and she had a whole house full of stuff that she saved just for me. So that got added to the mess.

Over the years we have also added random things – kids’ items, bags, and boxes of crap that we “cleaned” up from around the house.

Basically, the storage unit is full of things. Most of which belong in the trash. Now that I am further removed from the deaths of our loved ones, I have suggested, many times, that we rent a dumpster, or call junk collectors, and just empty the majority of the stuff into it. Most of it hasn’t seen the light of day in over 15 years. Unfortunately, I keep getting overruled. Instead, it all just keeps sitting there.

Where is your clutter? How do you decide what stays and what goes?
