In a world often defined by routine and conformity, the late Robin Williams left us with a profound reminder that each of us possesses a unique and precious spark of madness – “You’re only given one little spark of madness. You mustn’t lose it”

The Gift of Individuality

I like to think that the “spark of madness” represents our individuality and the quirks that make each person unique. No two people are the same. Every person has individual thoughts, likes, dislikes, and quirks.

When we try to conform to the people or places around us, we begin to lose that uniqueness. Oftentimes, we conform without even being aware it is happening. We listen to those around us and change our answers to more closely resemble theirs. We watch what others are doing and begin doing similar things.

Conforming isn’t always bad, but it definitely isn’t often good.

Changing who we are to better fit in, to not stand out, to look smarter, to be the same as the “popular” people, or to be part of a group, takes away from the amazing person you are.

While blending in with a crowd can be advantageous, there are instances where conformity takes an unfavorable turn. Consider altering your appearance or demeanor to align with a group; it has the potential to erode your self-esteem.

Giving in to peer pressure opens the door to perilous or unlawful conduct, like partaking in underage drinking. Moreover, conforming can contribute to the bystander effect, where adhering to the group norm translates to a failure to intervene when someone requires assistance.

The inclination to conform may make you less receptive to fresh ideas or opposing viewpoints. Additionally, falling in line with a group might inadvertently foster sentiments or acts of bias.

In a society that often pressures us to conform, it’s essential to remember the wisdom of Robin Williams’ words: “You’re only given one little spark of madness. You mustn’t lose it.” Our individuality is a precious gift, and embracing our quirks and uniqueness enriches both our lives and the world around us.

It is clear to me that I knew where I was going with this blog when I started it, but lost the plot somewhere. So, be you and don’t let others sway you. Normal is overrated and doesn’t really exist. Use your “madness” to keep you moving forward in your passions.
