Who was your most influential teacher? Why?
My elementary school was very small. Because of this classes were set up as K-3 and 4-6, until it changed to K-2 and 3-5.
For my lower class years, I had a teacher, Jeannie DeMarinis. She is the only teacher who’s name I can remember, because she’s the only one who made me feel like I actually mattered.
If I remember correctly, she left after my 4th grade year. Off to something that spoke to her heart. I can’t remember what that was, but I can remember that I was devastated.
She taught every student Spanish. Something I’m sure she chose to do. It certainly wasn’t continued after she left.
Miss DeMarinis treated us like we were her kids. It was nice to feel like someone cared about me.
Many years later, I ran into her somewhere and she remembered me.
I am unable to give you a great reason she was the most influential teacher. What I can tell you is that she is who I always think about when anyone talks about the teachers they remember. I can tell you that I remember her sitting on the floor with her guitar singing us songs in Spanish with a beautiful smile on her face. I can tell you that this small town girl remembers how much this teacher touched her heart, even after 38 years.
Thank you, Jeannie DeMarinis!
