As a mountain girl, I love spending time in nature. That means that my favorite form of exercise is hiking. Light hiking. Even though I am a Colorado native, you will not find me climbing fourteeners. Not that I wouldn’t, but my back can’t handle that kind of hike without knocking me down for a few days. I stick to smaller hikes. Hikes that are set in the mountains, but have smaller inclines.
Ceran Saint Vrain Trailhead
My favorite hike is the Ceran Saint Vrain Trailhead above Jamestown. The trail starts by crossing a wooden bridge over the river. It stays shady through most of the hike, meaning you aren’t in the blaring Colorado sun in the summer. I am usually hiking with my husband and kids, so we don’t complete the entire trail, even if it is only about four miles round-trip. There are a couple of great places to go down to the river and have some time playing in the water, and maybe a snack. Before you cross the bridge there are great places for the same. I often take off my shoes and soak my feet in the water.
Since this trailhead is so close to where I grew up, it is a lot like going home for me. Sometimes I make the drive just to sit on those rocks at the start of the trail and center myself.

Maxwell Falls
Another favorite is Maxwell Falls Trail. This one has a lower trailhead, which is where we usually go from. It is a little shorter of a hike, but still has beautiful views. It is peaceful and near the water. If you are patient enough, and willing to do the work, you can catch sight of the actual falls. It has been a few years since we’ve done this one, but the kids and I really enjoyed it.

Where should I hike?
If I were visiting your neck of the woods, where would you suggest I hike while I am there? Is there a can’t-miss spot I have to check out? I would love to hear about your favorite hiking spots! What do you do for activities or exercise?
