There’s a version of spring cleaning where people open the windows, light a candle, and suddenly their entire house is spotless.
I would like to meet those people. I have questions.
Because over here, spring cleaning looks more like:
“What can I get done before someone needs something from me?”
And with summer coming, I’m trying not to create a perfect house, but to make life a little less chaotic when it gets even busier.
Quick note: Some of the links in this post are affiliate links. That just means if you click and buy, I may earn a small commission — at no extra cost to you.
I only share things I actually use, would use, or genuinely think might make life a little easier (because we could all use that).
Lower the Bar (Seriously)
We’re not deep-cleaning the entire house in one weekend. We’re not even pretending that’s an option.
We’re doing things like:
- One counter
- One drawer
- That one spot that’s been bothering you for weeks
That’s it. That counts.
I keep a few basics nearby, so I don’t have to go searching when I actually have a minute:
- A cleaner that works on basically everything – Lysol All Purpose Cleaner Spray (we don’t use the bleach unless absolutely needed since the smell sets off the kiddos’ gag reflex, and occasionally their asthma.)
- Microfiber cloths that don’t just push dirt around – Amazon Basics Microfiber Cleaning Cloths
- A random “deal with this later” basket – Wire Storage Baskets
If it takes more effort to get started than to actually clean, it’s not happening. We’re removing that barrier.
Make It Easier, Not Harder
If something saves you even a little bit of energy, it’s worth it.
Not in a “buy everything” way, just in a “why am I making this harder on myself?” way.
Things that have helped:
- A vacuum I don’t dread dragging out – Eureka NEU182B PowerSpeed Bagless Upright Vacuum (I just bought two of these in March, one for each floor of our house, so I don’t have to carry it back and forth)
- Storage bins that can survive real life – Clear Stackable Storage Bins with Lids (these ones are for things that are staying stored within the house, like pantry or closet use) 27 Gallon Industrial Storage Tote (these are the ones we use for things that are going to the storage unit – think holiday decorations)
- Anything that cuts down on steps in laundry – Collapsible Tall Clothes Hamper (the kids all do their own laundry, so we got this 3 pack so they had an easy way to get their clothes to the laundry room), Oceanstar Spa-Style Bamboo Laundry Hamper (each bathroom has one of these for the adult’s clothes and all laundry that doesn’t belong to the kids. The removable bag allows for easy transfer)
Because the goal isn’t a perfect system. It’s something you’ll actually use.
Focus on What Actually Matters
Not every space needs your attention right now.
Focus on the ones that affect your day:
- Where everyone dumps their stuff
- The kitchen chaos zone
- The bathroom you side-eye every morning
Even small changes help:
- Swapping out towels – Cotton Bath Towel Set of 18 AND (because I like my bath towel a bit bigger – Bath Sheets (we don’t typically do this with every season, but we do change them out a couple times a year, only buying new ones every 2-3 years)
- Adding something that smells clean – Simmer Pot (I use this during the day with a few different options, but this Simmer Pot Potpourri is the one I use the most often). There are also candles in almost every room in my house. I usually buy something like these Scented Candles to spread throughout.
- Giving everything a “home” so it stops multiplying – Under Sink Organizer (because my mil isn’t up and moving, she asks what we need when she is doing her online shopping. It became clear that not everyone knew where things were supposed to be stored, so we ended up with LOTS of extra cleaning supplies. This has helped) We had the same issue with our pantry, so I grabbed these Clear Plastic Storage Bins
You’re not fixing your whole house. You’re making a few spaces feel less overwhelming.
Summer Is Coming… Ready or Not
I’m not out here planning a picture-perfect summer. I’m just trying to make it easier to leave the house without it becoming a whole production.
Things that help:
- A bag that’s already stocked and ready – This Water Resistant Tote Bag lives by our front door, stocked with a couple of picnic blankets (Extra Large Beach Blanket, Orga’Neat Pocket Picnic Blanket), hand wipes (Purell Hand Sanitizing Wipes), snacks (Frito-Lay Fun Times Mix Variety Pack, Goldfish Cheddar Cheese Crackers, Trail Mix Variety Pack), and has a place for everyone’s water bottles.
- Water bottles we don’t have to think about – The youngest LOVES his water bottle, which you can find on Amazon or on my TikTok shop – HydroJug Kids – 20 oz (I get more if you use Amazon). My husband and I use these ThermoFlask Stainless Steel Water Bottles, and the middle has this CIVAGO 40 oz Insulated Stainless Steel Water Bottle.
- Sunscreen that lives where we’ll actually see it – Sunscreen is everywhere for us, because I WILL forget it and then burn. We keep many different ones: in the door bag, in my car, by every door, in the bathrooms, and most of the kids have their own in their rooms. One of the main ones we use is the Banana Boat Sport Ultra SPF 100 Sunscreen Spray. Then there is the face one, since the youngest has sensitive skin, he uses one specific one for his face – Neutrogena Sport Face Sunscreen SPF 70+
The less effort it takes to get out the door, the more likely it is to actually happen
Real Talk
Some days, “spring cleaning” is going to look like sitting down and thinking about cleaning.
Some days it’s one thing.
Some days it’s nothing.
And honestly? That doesn’t cancel out the effort.
Conclusion
I’m not aiming for a reset that looks good in pictures. I’m aiming for one that makes daily life a little easier.
A little less clutter.
A little less stress.
A little more breathing room.
That’s enough.
And if a few simple things help get me there without overcomplicating it? I’ll take it.
